In what can only be described as a strange day, yesterday offered more than it's fair share of controversy for the 2010 Local Organising Committee.
According to reports all over the web the press walked out on a World Cup 2010 press briefing yesterday as nobody showed up.
The media had expected to see Chairman Irvin Khoza, CEO Danny Jordaan and FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi but despite ongoing promises that they were on their way, they never showed.
Since the World Cup was awarded to South Africa we have witnessed a lot of mistakes made by the 2010 LOC but this is the biggest. You don't gather media outlets from all over the World then not show up.
I feel sorry for organising committee communications manager Tumi Makgabo who was told they were coming and relayed this message only for them not to come. Do they think they are bigger than the media?
In a twist for the day and probably something we should expect to see more of a delegation of FIFA officials led by Horst Schmidt told News24 yesterday that they were very happy with South Africa's preparations for the 2010 World Cup, saying that South Africa had made more rapid progress than their German predecessors.
"FIFA is very happy and satisfied with the progress made, not only is the country on time, but a bit ahead of Germany at the same time. We are happy with preparations and now it's for the Local Organising Committee to maintain the momentum."
Don't be surprised about the LOC not showing up yesterday, this type of thing has happened from day one. Horst Schmidt however, seems to have stamped his authority on the World Cup. I've got a feeling he is now the man leading this event although to save face the LOC will be the front.
