World Cup 2010 last 16: Spain v Portugal

When the referee blows the final whistle on this match, it is going to be quite sad, because for two full days, there isn't going to be any football and what are we going to do for two full days without any football?

I am sure we will find a path and it is only two days before the quarter finals start, so I am sure we will survive, but what a match to end on.

Match Details

  • Venue: Cape Town
  • Date: Tuesday, 29 June 2010
  • Kick-off: 8.30pm

Spain

Spain might have had a poor start to the tournament but they should never be taken lightly as they have the type of quality in the team that really is the type of quality that all of us would love to have in our side.

Even the Spanish bench is fantastic but despite the quality there are question marks over the side when up against a decent side and under pressure.

Portugal

Portugal on the other hand, while not the unknown quantity, do have something about them that suggests something special could happen.

They have one of the best players in the world with an uncanny ability to turn it on when needed and they have a team that looks to be playing for each other.

Opposition View

Spain striker, Fernando Torres
Cristiano has shown with his performances that he works for the team. Portugal play as one. They also concede very few goals and they are very dangerous in the final third of the pitch.
Portugal winger, Simao
Without showing them a lack of respect, we're not scared at all. We've got a great team, too. And to become better, we have to beat Spain. They're champions of Europe, but we have our own qualities.

Prediction

Spain should win this and that is where our money would go but we wouldn't blame you if you had a cheeky bet on Portugal and we wouldn't blame you if you had a cheeky little bet on David Villa to score at some time during the game - he is certainly on fire.
