World Cup 2010 last 16: Netherlands v Slovakia

With the shambles that was England well and truly behind us, we turn to the Dutch; a team with so much promise and one that is looking better this time round. They face Slovakia today and in this game, we have our bet of the day.

The Dutch were one of only two teams to win all three of their group games, the other was Argentina, and they are full of confidence with players that seem to be blossoming at the right time. Slovakia won one, drew one and lost one, coming second to Paraguay in their group. Who do you think we think is going to win today?

Match Details

  • Venue: Durban
  • Date: Monday, 28 June 2010
  • Kick-off: 4.00pm

Netherlands

The Dutch play football the right way. They like to attack in the right way and they know the importance of having the ball in possession. They also have some very good players that are coming good at the right time. If they win today and if we assume for a moment Brazil beat Chile, we fancy the Dutch can beat Brazil in the quarter-finals and we think they can beat Uruguay or Ghana in the semi-finals.

What we are saying is, we think the Dutch can go all the way and we think they will be playing Argentina in the final and we think it will be an excellent game.

Slovakia

Had Slovakia got England or Germany or Ghana or United States or Portugal or Paraguay or Japan I'd say Slovakia had a chance of winning in this round, but they have the Dutch and the Dutch are on fire and Slovakia struggled in the group stage.

Slovakia will be going home tomorrow and this is our bet of the day.

Opposition View

Netherlands defender, Giovanni van Bronckhorst
I do believe we will become world champions. There is a great atmosphere in the group and it's good to hear that so many people are supporting us back home.
Slovakia coach, Vladimir Weiss
What we've learnt since we started the World Cup is that everything's possible, but that's an old cliché. What we have shown is that we can play football against very strong teams. Of course we came here to fight for something sensational for us. We hope it'll be a beautiful game for us tomorrow. If we want to play well against the Netherlands, we'll have to repeat our performance against Italy, for whom we have big respect.

Prediction

This is one of the most one sided games we are going to see at this stage of the World Cup - probably even more one sided than Germany thrashing England yesterday. The Dutch will win and they will score goals. You wont get good odds, but the return you will get for one day isn't that bad.
