World Cup 2010 last 16: Argentina v Mexico

The England v Germany game is a big one and the three of us here are all English so we find it a bit tough to write about it. We don't find it tough to write about Argentina and Mexico though and we think it will be a cracker too.

Argentina are our favourites to win the World Cup so even if England win, you can see what we think will happen in the next round and you can also see who we think is going to win today.

Match Details

  • Venue: Soccer City, Johannesburg
  • Date: Sunday, 27 June 2010
  • Kick-off: 8.30pm

Argentina

Our favourites and not just because of Messi or Mad Maradona. As a team, they just play some fantastic football and more importantly, they want to play beautiful football and when you've got the players that can do it, it just makes it easier.

These players also don't come around all the time and when they do, it is usually something special to watch and what we have seen from Argentina has been special so far.

They might not have had the most difficult group but you can only beat the teams put in front of you and they were one of only two teams to get a maximum nine points from the group stage (Netherlands were the other team).

Mexico

We were impressed with Mexico to begin and when the beat France we looked up and took notice, but then they lost to Uruguay and we lose a bit of the belief that maybe the could surprise a few.

Don't get us wrong, we are not writing off Mexico but for them to beat Argentina is going to take something special and we are not convinced they are going to have what it takes.

Opposition View

Mexico defender, Rafael Marquez told FIFA.com
I think we have a good chance of going far, but you have to take it one game at a time, and Argentina will be tough to beat. I'm confident we can reproduce the same form we showed against France and cause an upset. We have little to lose and there is more pressure on them, being favourites.
Argentina midfielder, Jonas Gutierrez
The group phase could not have gone better for us. We won all three of our matches and almost everyone got a game. That makes us all feel wanted and part of the team. But that's in the past now and we need to start thinking about what 's coming up.

Prediction

Our bet of the day is Argentina to win and while Mexico could surprise, the chances are slim. We wouldn't put our house on it because at this stage of the World Cup anything is possible but we really do think Argentina can go all the way and win this tournament.
