World Cup 2010 Group E: Decision day

The side I expected to finish bottom of this group is the side that I think will be joining the Dutch today into the last sixteen; Denmark.

I think they have surprised a few, maybe even themselves and with Cameroon losing this evening - yep, that is the banker bet of the day, it makes for a really interesting game between Denmark and Japan and while I fancy Denmark will make it, I was wrong once before, just a few years ago, when I thought I could bring DayGlo back into fashion.

Joking aside - the Dutch will go through as winners of this group unless there is a major upset and we can't see that happening, so they will be playing the runner up of Group F and the whoever comes in second will be playing the winners of Group F - something that we think the runners up will be happy with.

All Group E games today kick off at 8.30pm in South Africa

Group E Table

Team P W D L GD Pts
Netherlands 2 2 0 0 3 6
Japan 2 1 0 1 0 3
Denmark 2 1 0 1 -1 3
Cameroon 2 0 0 2 -2 0

Cameroon v Netherlands

Cameroon really have not done as well as I expected - but I was hoping for so much from the African teams that I allowed reality to be blinded by optimism - something football fans allow happen all the time, but I should have known better.

The Dutch on the other hand have looked exactly how many would have expected; professional, controlled with some good football. The talk is, they also have Arjen Robben coming back for this match - so they will be stronger and we expect him to score if he does start.

Denmark v Japan

This is the game of the day for us and we expect to see two sides play until they have nothing else to play for tonight and while we think Denmark will win, all Japan have to play for is the draw and if it does finish all even - Japan will be going through.

Our Prediction

We can not see further than the Dutch in the first game and they will win the group so if you were going to have a bet today - that is where you put your money and if you wanted to make things a little nail biting, put a fiver on Denmark too. They are the favourites as far as the bookies are concerned but it will be a very tight game and anything can happen in football. We don't think it will be as straight forward as the bookies think.
