World Cup 2010 Day 18: England news round-up

Some of the England players were seen laughing and joking when getting back to their hotel last night and Wayne Rooney was heard muttering something about loyalty under his breath.

He'll see what loyalty really is from his private resort on his private holiday island in The Bahamas when he lands on his private jet, that is for sure. No it isn't, but he doesn't really care, Rooney doesn't really know.

However, there is potentially some good news coming up for England. They will find out in December if they have won the right to host the 2018 World Cup. They are going to need it, if they want to qualify for the tournament.

Keep your fingers crossed for it and if you are a Spurs fan, hope that Fabio Capello isn't sacked and doesn't walk away - otherwise, you might be losing your manager.

Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp told talkSPORT today "There's not an Englishman - whether it's me, Roy Hodgson or Sam Allardyce - who would turn the job down because it's our country and we want to manage our country."

Terry Butcher

Former captain Terry Butcher seems to know the reasons why England failed. He puts it down to commitment. "Does it mean as much to play for your country as it did before? I don't think it does.

"They don't get paid by England, they get paid by their clubs, so you can understand the manager saying 'don't get injured, you've got a big Champions League match, a big game in the Premier League next week'.

"I don't think our players are totally committed to England as they have been in the past because they have to play these big games for their clubs.

"If you look at the Germans, and other countries as well, it means a hell of a lot to play for their country."

Graham Taylor

Former England manager Graham Taylor has another opinion on why England didn't make it. He thinks, in a similar view to Butcher, that it is down to the clubs but also thinks the players need to take some responsibility.

"Capello probably will go because of the result but (as players) you have to take responsibility," Taylor said.

"I definitely don't think I've seen an England side defend so poorly. All the basics seemed to disappear. We didn't seem to know what we were doing."

German Media

The German press however put it down to karma. "Now we are quits," said the Westdeutsche Allgemeine and Welt newspapers. "Thank you, football God," added the popular Bild newspaper.

We say, Germany have a great squad and we really wouldn't be surprised to see them win something in two years time or maybe even four, in Brazil, but we maybe overly optimistic today.
