We know it isn't very funny but a referee in the final really is the closest England are going to get to a World Cup final, unless all of a sudden wage capping is brought into the game and there is a limit on the number of foreigners that can play in a team.
So, because none of that will happen, ever, poor England will have to do with having referees in World Cup finals and today, FIFA confirmed that Premier League referee Howard Webb and his two trusty sidekicks will referee the show-piece match on Sunday.
Webb will be the first Englishman to referee the final since Jack Taylor in 1974. His two assistants, Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann, are also English
During this World Cup he has refereed three matches and has neither shown a red card nor awarded a penalty. He has however handed out 5.67 bookings per games - the second highest tally in tournament.
