Stay safe while driving in South Africa

We like it when we can tell you about something that really is very important and while, if you had done your research, you should know this, you might not and actually, there is nothing wrong with telling you this again. Reiteration carries conviction and all that.

The message is; be careful not to be caught out by fake roadside incidents by motorists that appear to be distressed while travelling in South Africa. This message is straight from the FCO.

If a person looks as though they need help on the road, report the incident to the police rather than stopping your car and helping. If you do, you might end up in a spot of bother as it is car-jackers preferred way of getting you to stop so they can pretty much take your car and all your belongings.

The FCO website has lots more information; top of the list is"Reduce the risk of 'smash and grab' raids by keeping your doors locked and valuables out of sight, preferably in the boot," added the FCO spokesman.

"Night-time driving can be difficult as most areas have little or no street lighting. Care should be taken, especially with animals potentially on the road and other vehicles driving without lights on.

"South Africa offers some spectacular scenery for those thinking of driving around the country. You drive on the same side of the road as the UK but there are other challenges to bear in mind.

"The limits for drink-driving are lower than in the UK, so be aware of how much alcohol you consume. In rural areas, there can be large distances between petrol stations, so plan ahead."
