It wasn't the best football match you are going to see at this World Cup, but it also wont be the worst - the match between Paraguay and Japan earlier today will take some beating to that accolade.

Overall, not a great day for the football fan but an interesting one. Spain read the script and Spain are through to the quarter finals and Portugal head home, then off on a nice break somewhere hot before back to club football starting in a few weeks.

The winner for Spain came in the 63rd minute. A clever touch from Xavi played in David Villa who had his first shot saved but made no mistake with his second. It was almost as if the script was written for him, as he is now the joint top scorer in the tournament with four, alongside Higuain from Argentina and Vittek from Slovakia.

It wasn't a surprise that Spain won also. You're not surprised, I'm not and the chances are the only surprised people you will find are Portuguese and that surprise won't last very long either, much like the English surprise at going out to Germany.

Where it went wrong for Portugal

You can build a team around one player, in fact I think you should, but you need to compliment that player and play to his strengths but tonight, Portugal left Ronaldo by himself and when you do that with a player like that, you are looking for miracles and miracles rarely happen when other people are looking.

Bottom line, Spain always looked like they were in control, despite some pressure from Portugal in the first half but after they scored, they went into possession mode for the remainder of the game and that is a game they are so good at.

Portugal will do better in the European Championships in two years time and had they met one of the other sides that had played today, they would have gone further. It is just the luck of the draw.

If I were you, I'd get your money on them as the only thing likely to stop them on that performance would be the entire squad coming down with food poisoning two hours before they play Paraguay and actually, that might not help.
