Paraguay v Spain: World Cup 2010 quarter final preview

When you get to this stage of any tournament things are serious and it makes things difficult to predict. Sometimes however, you get a team that rode their luck and you know are not going to progress. We have one of those teams in this match, can you guess which one?

Only one team finished top of their group in a worse position that Paraguay and that was the United States - even the team they beat on penalties in the last sixteen got more points than them in second place. Tonight, the luck runs out.

Match Details

  • Venue: Ellis Park, Jozi
  • Date: Saturday, 3 July 2010
  • Kick-off: 8.30pm

Paraguay

They finished top of their group on five points and if you could travel back in time to the beginning of the World Cup and place all your bets using just your memory - you still wouldn't bet on Paraguay.

The football is okay and the work rate is very good but they lack creativity and for that they will be punished tomorrow night.

Spain

There is a saying in Spain that the wise man waits for Paraguay. Okay - I might have made that up, but Spain have waited for Paraguay and I think they will have fun. They will have fun because they are getting better each game.

I also fancy this will be the game Fernando Torres wakes from his footballing coma too - so he will be a good bet to score any time in the match.

Opposition View

Spain coach, Vicente del Bosque
Our striker right now is Fernando. He’s played four games, a lot of minutes and will play more. We’ve got full confidence in him while we also know that Fernando Llorente brings a lot of qualities too.
Paraguay goalkeeper, Justo Villar
It’s going to be a good match where you will see two types of football. We won’t give them any space. One side trying to attack skillfully while we try to stop them and then try to take advantage of our chances.

Prediction

This is our bet of the quarter finals - Spain will win. We also like the odds of Torres to score but that is just us - we like to spice up the bets of the day, because they are bets of the day for a reason. In fact, this one is so good we are calling it the bet of the round - you don't get much better than that.

We like Spain - we just can't see them going all the way - although when you get to the semi-finals - anything really is possible.
