The match between Algeria and Slovenia that has just kicked off will be the first World Cup match ever that is played on a surface that is not 100% grass - not something that will be new to all players, but still a first for a FIFA World Cup.
The stadiums in Polokwane and Nelspruit are the only ones at this World Cup to not have 100% grass but if it goes well, expect more stadiums to be given approval for this at future World Cups.
"It's brand new turf for us," said Algerian defender Majid Bougherra. "It'll be a pretty fast game," he said when asked about the surface.
Slovenian defender Bostjan Cesar was happy with it. "Sometimes it might be a bit unusual for the Slovenians -- but the ball runs smoothly," he told the press.
