Confirmed: World Cup matches on your mobile phone

In April last year, FIFA TV Director Niclas Ericson confirmed that the option to watch World Cup matches on your mobile was going to become a reality and now, the BBC have confirmed that you'll be able to watch these matches with an iPhone or iPod.

For the moment, the application is only available for Apple devices but it is expected that similar versions will be made available for Blackberry and Google Android "smartphones".

There will also be "video on demand" features so you will likely be able to see highlights and goals from the tournament for matches you might have missed.

The application will launch in May but the BBC are also planning to broadcast other events throughout the year including Premier League matches for next season.

Erik Huggers, BBC's Director of Future Technology
As media converges and technology accelerates, licence fee payers are increasingly using sophisticated handheld devices to access information. They tell us that they want to access the digital services that they have paid for at a time and place that suits them.

We are catching up with our audiences, and the same content that we broadcast on television and online can now be enjoyed on the move.

The app will be available to UK users but it is expected that other countries will have other services available and announcements are expected soon. We will update you as and when we get the information.

The announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not long to go now - so go get your iPhone or Nexus One quickly.
