Cape Town World Cup stadium to be built on golf course

It was confirmed yesterday that the new stadium for Cape Town will not be built on the site of the existing Green Point stadium but just a few yards away on the Metropolitan Golf Course.

The projected cost has also been reduced from R3,3 billion to R2,49 billion after the size of the stadium was reduced and a few features removed. For those living in Green Point they'll be pleased to know that the stadium will be as tall as a 16 storey building.

The local residents are up in arms about the stadium and would rather it was built on top of the existing stadium which is to be kept as a community venue. Why two stadiums though?

The City of Cape Town, as the applicant of the development, or the public, have 30 days in which to appeal against the decision. If any appeals are lodged, the matter will be referred to Environment Affairs and Development Planning MEC Tasneem Essop for a decision.
