Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille yesterday placed an immediate stop on contract appointments for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, pending a comprehensive financial audit of Cape Town's capacity to host the event which is sure to alert Danny Jordaan and the Local Organising Committee.
She's not stopping the development of the stadium at Greenpoint, she just wants to know where the R1 billion is going to come from to finance the development. Maybe they could use some of the salary earmarked for Sven Goran Eriksson!
After hearing that Cape Town would need to find the additional funds Zille commented "Do we build this stadium or do we get essential services, like sewerage, to the poor?"
R500 million comes from the province but Cape Town has to find the rest. Zille is more interested in seeing the financial projections for the event than how the stadium will actually be built and she has concerns that rushing in could 'bankrupt' the City.
