Ndebele said that sporting guru Irvin Khosa (vice-president of the South African Football Association) was in Durban earlier this week "and the optimism shown towards KwaZulu-Natal was inspiring".
The decision - about where the opening and key games were to be held - was Fifa's responsibility. It was expected that official announcements would be made once next year's Soccer World Cup was over.
The premier, who was the guest speaker at the Zulu Kingdom Awards for Service Excellence at the Sibaya Casino conference centre, said the 2010 Soccer World Cup offered a myriad new business and empowerment opportunities that must be seized upon.
One goal was to ensure that Durban and the region became a "home ground" venue for one of the big soccer countries, like Brazil, Argentina, Germany or France.
