Wayne Rooney: He doesn't have a clue

There is a huge gap between the average supporter and the average football player these days. The gap is even bigger when you look at the type of player that plays for England - earning millions each season and living a life so far removed from the real world, that they can hardly be blamed not really knowing what is going on and acting the way they do.

They are coached on what to say, how to say it and when to say. Some are told to kiss the badge and if you offer one of them a little more money they will happily jump ship or say whatever you want.

The gap is so large these days that Wayne Rooney, someone that has only ever known football, can not be blamed for his outburst after the shambles of a performance he and the rest of the England players put in last night. He can not be blamed because they are better than us.

Real World Perspective

A friend of mine has saved up for two years to travel to South Africa this summer and when I say he has saved, what I mean is he has sacrificed. He got rid of his mobile phone, stopped with his favourite take away food and he only went out for a beer on a Thursday night - his reasoning was he wouldn't spend too much on a Thursday and you know what, it worked. After two years he had enough for all the flights, his hotels and match tickets for him and his girlfriend.

What my friend had to save, Wayne Rooney earns in a day. How can someone that has spent the last fourteen years of his life (he joined Everton when he was 11 years old) in the football bubble, really understand.

The truth is, he can't understand and despite all the coaching he will get when he gets home, to say the right things and despite all the money he will be paid by one of the tabloids to 'bare his soul' on his 'England heartbreak', what Wayne Rooney did last night, when he uttered those words into the camera, was just distance the supporters a little bit further.

Wayne Rooney
Nice to see your own fans booing you. That's what loyal support is.

I didn't think there was much further the average football supporter could be distanced, but Wayne Rooney found a way last night. A very good footballer, of that there is no doubt, but he really doesn't have a clue.
