This wasn't the result either side would have wanted two hours ago and it wasn't the result either side thought they were going to get, but after ninety minutes and after a very good start from England, the United States will be the happier team.
But England fans should also not forget that it was a schoolboy goalkeeping error that robbed them of three points tonight and had someone told Robert Green to catch and hold every ball instead of not doing that, England would have had three points tonight, instead of one.
On balance of play England will be disappointed they didn't win but they will have to take it in their stride even if the draw does leave this group open to a surprise.
Goals
Steven Gerrard got the first from a perfectly weighted ball from Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey and for much of the first half it was enough. That was until Clint Dempsey decided to shoot from Botswana and Robert Green decided to play handball with the shot. It hit him and instead of bouncing forward it bounced behind.
