Nigeria 2 South Korea 2: Yakubu will have nightmares

First things first; congratulations South Korea. You deserve to be in the last sixteen and you've done well. You might struggle against Uruguay, but you might also surprise a few - I hope you surprise us.

But South Korea drawing with Nigeria isn't the news - we predicted that result yesterday, so we are not surprised. The real news is Yakubu missing a sitter.

And when we say sitter, I am not joking when I say my nine month old daughter would have scored this and she can only walk one or two steps - just the contact she would have made with the ball when falling over would have been enough. I really am not exaggerating.

This is what happened. Nigeria are attacking (they did a lot of this today) and they get the ball down the left and the cross comes in to Yakubu who is no more than three yards from the goal line directly in front of goal. There is no goalkeeper, because he has dived to try and get the ball - it is just Yakubu and an empty goal, no more than three yards away.

The ball comes to him and he shoots. I already start typing 'goal' on Twitter, to let a few of you know and as I look up to check the time of the goal, I see him hit it wide. He hit it wide from three yards with nobody to beat.

It was a horrible moment, but those things happen in football and had he scored that sitter, Nigeria might not have gone on to win 3-2 and play in the last sixteen of the the World Cup.

The game and the goals

Nigeria looked a lot better today and it is unfortunate that they waited until the must win game to play this way, but they will have learnt a lesson now.

The first goal came very early on and was scored by Kala Uche - 1-0 and it made the game interesting for a fair chunk of the first half as Nigeria didn't give up. But with a few minutes to go in the first half Lee Jung-Soo levelled things up after a free kick from the left went over everyone and landed at his head and then foot.

Just after the restart South Korea went 2-1 up when Park Chu-Young floated a free kick into the goal and at that sage of the game South Korea were going through quite comfortably. Then game the Yakubu moment - but it came because Nigeria were pressing.

A minute or two after the Yakubu moment Nigeria get a penalty and Yakubu converts it. The game is tied at 2-2 and while Martins could have won it for Nigeria, this was already written as the result and South Korea were going to go through.

If only Nigeria had played like this in the other two games - it would have been different.
