South Africa draw with Mexico in World Cup opener

On chances, 1-1 is a fair result, but I so wanted South Africa to win and I know that it is probably wrong of me to write that, at the very beginning, but it is true. South Africa would have come alive tonight had Bafana Bafana won but in the real world, this is probably the best result for them.

And when I say it is a fair result, chances are you will find a South Africa or two later, somewhere, claiming they should have won and you know what, they could have, they were that close.

South Africa were also a little unlucky. They went 1-0 up, courtesy of a very well taken goal from Tshabalala in the 55th minute and kept that lead until ten minutes from time and they even hit the post with two minutes to go. They also had the better chances to win this match, but like I said, overall, probably a fair result.

Mexico looked good early on, attacking mostly down the right and using what looked like three up front. South Africa on the other hand decided to sit back and soak up the pressure and it worked for them.

I also wouldn't be surprised to read one or two South African media outlets comparing the football we saw today, to that of a Brazilian side, which some might think is overly generous but it is also not without merit; the football was played along the ground and it was good. You could argue that they are just lacking the quality players in the final third to really make it work but Carlos Alberto Parreira has left his signature all over this team.

Mexico were no slouches either and while I fancy both these team to do well in the group, I'll hold off predicting that both will go through on the back of one match, but I really wouldn't be surprised.

A great opening game and the opening ceremony was fantastic too. More of this and we will all be very happy. Now, we have just under three hours until the next game. I can't wait.
