Michael Dawson and Joe Cole likely to be the last two names who don’t make England World Cup squad

It looks as though some pretty big names will miss out on Fabio Capello’s final England World Cup Squad, which is set to be announced on June 1st.

It is a nervous time for the 30 players who are currently in training with England and seven unlucky players will not make the plane for South Africa, at least five of the players who won’t be in the squad for England v USA or the rest of England matches look fairly certain according to the latest odds.

The strongest of the World Cup tips for players set to miss out on the World Cup are Shaun Wright Phillips, Scott Parker and Stephen Warnock, all three of these players are around the 3/1 mark to go to the World Cup. It seems none of them have done enough at this stage to impress Fabio Capello and to show that they can make an impact at the World Cup.

The next two players in the pecking order to make the 23 man squad are Darren Bent and Tom Huddlestone, the to make the squad odds suggest neither player will go to the World Cup but if there is an injury in one of their positions then they are the best back up and they could still realistically go to the World Cup. That leaves just two more players likely to be cut out from the final squad.

The final two most likely to be heartbroken on the 1st June are Michael Dawson and Joe Cole. Both are actually odds on to be in the squad and it looks as though either could go to the World Cup 2010 and that perhaps England boss Fabio Capello still hasn’t made up his mind. The odds suggest that if Dawson does go it will be in the place of Matthew Upson whilst Joe Cole is battling for the same place as Adam Johnson, they are almost identical odds to go to the World Cup.

Even if these players do make it into the England squad they are still well down the pecking order as far as starting places are concerned and probably won’t play. The World Cup experience should be good for them though as some of the could still have a very bright England future ahead of them.
