This week’s World Cup 2010 warm up is England v Egypt and it is a perfect opportunity for Capello to test some of the less experienced England players alongside the regulars. His decisions may have been made a little easier with several key players missing.
The most high profile position at the moment is the left back position. Ashley Cole is injured and Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for selection so that leaves us with Leighton Baines and Stephen Warnock to battle it out for the deputy spot in that position. Both players will more than likely get a chance to play on Wednesday.
We should also get some idea who is going to partner Rooney up front at the World Cup. If England are going to justify the England World Cup Odds they will need to get the best out of Rooney and on Wednesday there are a few contenders - Heskey, Crouch, Defoe or Carlton Cole who get the nod. No one can deny that Heskey gets the best out of his striker partners but can we afford to have a striker at the World Cup who can’t score goals? Cole could be our best option as he offers more dimensions than his competitors.
Terry is not in great form and Ferdinand is missing once again with his troublesome back problems. So there’s an option for a central defender to stake a claim. Terry will start the game alongside Matthew Upson in all probability but Joleon Lescott will be hoping he deserves that, whilst Ryan Shawcross has been handed a chance to impress and could come off the bench to stake his claim.
England’s biggest problem without a doubt is in goal. Joe Hart is back in the squad after his impressive form this season for Birmingham. It is hard to say Robert Green is anything better than a solid keeper but David James has struggled with injuries all season and will hardly get to the World Cup full of confidence after his season with Portsmouth. Many fans will be hoping Joe Hart starts the game and puts in a good performance so he can make the number one jersey his own.
