The centre of Kaiserslautern will be transformed into a 2006 FIFA World Cup Mile for the duration of the tournament, the city authorities have announced.

The wide-ranging event will broadly divide into two areas, an Official Public Viewing Area boasting a giant screen and a stage, and a Fans Area. The FIFA World Cup Mile will run from the Central Station via the Eisenbahnstra?e and Rummelstra?e to Stiftsplatz. The city is also to launch its official FIFA World Cup poster in Schillerplatz next Monday.

In summer 2006, performers from all branches of the arts will entertain guests along the Eisenbahnstra?e, with abundant catering facilities on hand. Stiftsplatz itself will host a FIFA World Cup related entertainment programme every day during the tournament from 2 pm until midnight.

Kaiserslautern FIFA World Cup co-ordinator Erwin Saile declared himself extremely pleased with the result of the planning phase: "Now we have a firm provisional plan, we can go into the details and decide what can and can't be done." The city intended to show its credentials as a creative and affectionate host, the official continued: "Visitors to our city will discover it really is a place to make friends, and they'll find out just how much we natives of the Pf?lz welcome guests to our parties."

The poster, featuring an image entitled "IT" and blown up to 15 square metres, will be unveiled at 2 pm on Monday 22 November in Schillerplatz. The launch marks the start of poster sales at a Christmas market stand jointly run by the FIFA World Cup office and the Garden Show.

Nearly 3,000 people took part in choosing the image for the poster.
