South African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan on Thursday praised Bafana Bafana for playing the kind of football that people wanted to see when they beat Nigeria 2-1 on Wednesday night. But he made it clear that Bafana Bafana should be consistent. "If they are consistent, we will go all the way to Germany. That is the important platform ? to use these youngsters as the basis for the team in 2010," said a delighted Jordaan. Bafana Bafana's next assignment is in March, when they embark on the qualifying rounds for both the World Cup and African Nations Cup in Germany and Egypt in 2006.
Bafana Bafana were humiliated by the Nigerians in their previous four encounters. But that came to an end when the fired-up locals retained the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Ellis Park Stadium. Diminutive Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi was outstanding. He outshone all the big name players, and crowned his splendid show by scoring South Africa's second goal. The first goal was scored by Shaun Bartlett in the 22nd minute. Gift Leremi turned on the heat immediately after his introduction late in the game. He took total control of the midfield where Quinton Fortune had had a quiet evening. Leremi, Vilakazi's team-mate, is showing greater maturity in every game, and he tried his luck but his shot attempt outside the penalty box was parried for a corner. In the defence Kaizer Chiefs' hard man Cyril Nzama, Aaron Mokoena and Nasief Morris put out all threatening fires at the back. Nigerian coach Christian Chukwu said the result would have remained the same even if he had brought his best squad. Sapa> |
