 Sepp Blatter picks South Africa Despite reports suggesting this is the first time we've heard of a contingency plan to stage the 2010 World Cup somewhere else, FIFA President Sepp Blatter, has today brought the subject up again and back into the spotlight.
Back in May, Blatter confirmed that the United States, England, Mexico, Japan and Spain would all be ready to stage the 2010 World Cup if South Africa couldn't, because of a 'natural disaster'.
Talking to the press today, Blatter said "I would be a very negligent president if I hadn't put away in a drawer somewhere a Plan B."
"However, only a natural catastrophe would change things. If we had to activate the Plan B, we would take our decision after the Confederations Cup."
The Confederations Cup takes place in South Africa this time next year and the event will be used to test some of the stadiums, the transportation, hotel facilities and logistics in South Africa.
The embarrassing part of this story is that earlier in the week, Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan told the press "I think it was misconception in the world that there was a so-called Plan B, it was just not real. I think it's a lack of understanding. I think it's ignorance, frankly."
More egg on face for Danny Jordaan, but rest assured, it will take a 'natural catastrophe' for the World Cup to moved away from South Africa and we all know that isn't going to happen. |
