At the end of March construction began, or the sod turning ceremony at least, on the Peter Mokaba Stadium to be built in Polokwane for the 2010 World Cup.

The Peter Mokaba Stadium is one of five venues South Africa is building for the 2010 World Cup. The others are in Cape Town, Nelspruit, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

The other venues, which are all having work done on them in time for 2010 are the FNB Stadium and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg and Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein.

The new stadium in Polokwane is set to seat 45,000 with 5,000 seats set aside for VIP's and 5,000 seats set aside for the media with two lounges.

The stadium should be complete in March 2009, fifteen months before it is going to be needed in the World Cup , where it will hold five matches.
