Beckenbauer issues 2010 World Cup warning PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 September 2006

2006 World Cup organising committee chairman and German legend Franz Beckenbauer has today raised even more concerns over the 2010 World Cup that is supposed to be held in South Africa.

Beckenbauer also confirmed that there are contingency plans in place if FIFA felt like moving the venue, Australia are favourites if this was to fall through.

"The organisation for the World Cup in South Africa is beset by big problems," Beckenbauer said.

"But these are not South African problems - these are African problems. People are working against rather than with each other."

Talking of the contingency plans he said "There are emergency solutions, but Germany is not one of them, there are enough other solutions."

For this World Cup to be a success we need consistency and truth from the 2010 Local Organising Committee. No more veiled threats and a commitment to working with people to make this a success rather than against people.

The World Cup will be a success in South Africa but I suspect changes will need to be made, fairly soon, for that to happen.
