The rail link, we are dubbing at the '2010 White Elephant' will be ready for the World Cup according to Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe.
The Gautrain project is a rapid rail link between Johannesburg International Airport and Johannesburg and Pretoria. We are convinced it will be used during 2010 and visiting tourists after the event but we're fairly sure you're not going to get many South African' using the service; but it will still be nice for 2010.
"We are doing everything in our power as a government to ensure that the construction of the Gautrain is going ahead," Radebe said.
"[An amount] of R3,8-billion has been set aside for this purpose and is meant to leverage other funds available to develop public-transport infrastructure," he said.
Some of the funds will be going to projects approved by the meeting, including R700-million for improved bus and taxi infrastructure and R1,6-billion for capital-expenditure projects.
The department has already established a World Cup office structure to oversee the implementation of all transport plans prior to 2010.
