World Cup not leaving South Africa in 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 03 July 2006

Reports in an Afrikaans newspaper on Sunday claiming that South Africa were on the brink of losing the rights to the World Cup in 2010 are untrue.

Michael Palmer, head of the FIFA office in South Africa told the Star on Sunday "That's absolutely untrue, 100 percent. There's no contingency plan at all. Someone has made that up."

FIFA spent a lot of time and money making sure South Africa was the right choice. The World Cup will be taking place in South Africa in 2010 and not going to Australia as reported.

Despite a few early glitches the 2010 Local Organising Committee are on top of all issues related to staging the event in four years.

Australia might have a chance in 2018, but in 2010 South Africa is the new home of football.
