South Africa will spend up to 5 billion rand ($810 million) on infrastructure for the 2010 World Cup, the National Treasury said on Wednesday.

Presenting the government's budget for this year, Trevor Manuel said about 3 billion rand of this would be set aside over the next three years.

"Details of project allocations have not yet been allocated, but we will spend up to 5 billion rand in dedicated infrastructure for the World Cup," Manuel said.

South Africa has secured the rights to host the 2010 showpiece and plan to use 10 stadiums - five of which will be constructed, with the remainder being refurbished.

"I understand that both the national football side and the cricket team have volunteered to do unpaid clearing of building rubble. There are no joys without nightmares that precede them," said Manuel, jokingly.
