South Africa coach Stuart Baxter says he has held discussions over a possible extension to his current contract. Baxter became Bafana Bafana's eleventh coach in just over 10 years in April last year when he signed a two-year deal to take over from April 'Styles' Phumo. The 51-year-old Briton coach has since led South Africa to the top of their 2006 World Cup qualifying group. And the country's governing football body - SAFA- now appears keen for him to remain in charge until it hosts the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
"The South African Football Association are talking to me at the moment about whether I'd contemplate staying on until 2010 when the World Cup comes here," Baxter told Scotland's Sunday Herald newspaper. "I don't know the answer to that yet, but I'm very aware that, although my remit is until 2006, and I'll be the one who'll lose out if we don't qualify for the next World Cup, this country is preparing for 2010 and that means so much to them." However, Baxter believes that if he fails to record victories in Wednesday's friendly with Australia and the World Cup qualifier against Uganda on March 26 he may find himself out of work. "They may be asking me to stay on now, but if we lose to Australia and then lose our qualifying match against Uganda next month they will be kicking me out of the door." South Africa currently top World Cup qualifying Group Two, one point ahead of Ghana's Black Stars. taken from the BBC |
