Ethiopians scammed by World Cup job promises PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 04 February 2005
A man from Ethiopia quit his job as a mechanic and sold everything he had for a journey to South Africa, where he was promised a well paid job was his in helping the build up to the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

During his journey the men with the golden promise took all his money and left him in a hut in Mozambique with no money, no promise and no hope.

Officials believe the man was one of many young men 'conned' by criminals who prey on innocents desperate to leave Ethiopia. The hook is the high-paying job helping prepare for the World Cup tournament that will be held in South Africa in 2010.

Officials have fears that the conmen are operating throughout Africa and are warning people that these are just scams and not to fall for it.

A spokesman from Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that a joint committee had been set up with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Immigration to look into the problem. The committee was to consider what legal action could be taken and what could be done to warn the public, the official said.
