Asian round-up: Japan and Korea Republic on course PDF

The opening round of Asian Zones qualifying finals for FIFA World Cup? Germany ended with the eastern Asian powers on top. 2002 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Korea Republic defeated the visiting Kuwait side 2-0 with Lee Dong-gook and Lee Young-pyo scoring in either half. In an earlier game, two lapses by the hesitant Korea DPR goalkeeper Sim Sung-Chol handed home team Japan a crucial, hard-fought victory. The star-studded travelling Iran side failed to avenge their 3-1 defeat to Bahrain in the all-important FIFA World Cup qualifier four years ago after a goalless 90 minutes, while three-time Asian champions Saudi Arabia had to settle for a point against Uzbekistan.

Despite the opening wins, nothing is settled for the two triumphant Eastern Asian sides with five rounds still to play.

U.S. outclass Trinidad 2-1 in final round of qualifiers PDF

The United States outclassed Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Eddie Johnson and Eddie Lewis as they began the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Johnson scored on the half-hour mark in only his fourth international appearance, while Lewis struck the eventual winner just after the break to clinch the points as the teams opened the 10-game final group qualifying stage.

The U.S. win, secured by a world class performance from keeper Kasey Keller, stretched their unbeaten run to 32 matches against regional competition and 14 versus all opponents.

World Cup tickets will be like gold dust PDF

The organisers of next year's football World Cup in Germany yesterday identified ticket sales as their biggest problem, admitting that thousands of people would miss out on seats.

The tournament will provide unprecedented publicity for CTS Eventim, the world's second-largest ticket supplier behind Ticketmaster of the US. But the most prestigious sporting event in Germany for 30 years comes with huge risks.

"The demand for tickets will be far greater than the number available," said Franz Beckenbauer, the competition's chief organiser and a former World Cup winner as both player and manager for Germany.

Deutsche Bahn named 2006 FIFA World Cup Official Supplier PDF

Deutsche Bahn AG is the sixth and final Official Supplier of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Deutsche Bahn AG Chairman Hartmut Mehdorn and German Organising Committee (OC) President Franz Beckenbauer announced in Berlin on Tuesday. "We are delighted and proud to welcome the German railways to our team. A global event such as this is hardly imaginable without the railway network as a provider of mobility and logistic services," Beckenbauer declared.

A new study by Cologne market research institute Sport+Markt has found that Football remains Germany's favourite sport by a wide margin.

And even with 554 days still to go before the Opening Match on 9 June 2006 in Munich, the next FIFA World Cup is an increasingly influential factor driving the positive trend and the game's broad appeal.

The global festival of football topped a popularity ranking on 72 percent, reflecting a rising tide of anticipation around the country ahead of the second finals in Germany.

The event is still a year-and-a-half away, but the study indicates it has already gripped the popular imagination more than this year's major sporting highlights.

South Korea to consider unified team at World Cup 2006 PDF

South Korea's national association will consider forming a unified team with North Korea for the 2006 World Cup if both teams qualified, a South Korean soccer official said Friday.

Both North and South Korea have advanced to the final round of qualifiers for the 2006 finals in Germany, and North Korea coach Yun Jong Su said after his team's 1-0 loss to the United Arab Emirates in Dubai on Wednesday he would like the two teams to go to the finals as one.

Kaiserslautern unveils poster, plans for FIFA World Cup Mile PDF

The centre of Kaiserslautern will be transformed into a 2006 FIFA World Cup Mile for the duration of the tournament, the city authorities have announced.

The wide-ranging event will broadly divide into two areas, an Official Public Viewing Area boasting a giant screen and a stage, and a Fans Area. The FIFA World Cup Mile will run from the Central Station via the Eisenbahnstra?e and Rummelstra?e to Stiftsplatz. The city is also to launch its official FIFA World Cup poster in Schillerplatz next Monday.

The city of Frankfurt is characterised by a thicket of banking skyscrapers and the River Main snaking through the heart of the metropolis. Come the summer of 2006, that imposing skyline and picturebook riverbank scenery, trademark symbols of the Hesse state capital, are to radiate with the colours of football.

2006 Mascots Revealed PDF

The official mascot for 2006 World Cup in Germany will be a lion called 'Goleo VI', it has been revealed.

Franz Beckenbauer, head of the 2006 World Cup organising committee, and Brazilian World Cup legend Pele unveiled the mascot that harps back to 1966 when 'Willy' the lion was the mascot for the World Cup in England.

However, unlike Willy, Goleo the lion will be able to talk with the aid of an attached football.
