The 16-member committee to be chaired by Irvin Khoza comprises of government officials, the corporate world, the Confederation of African Football and prominent local soccer administrators.

South Africa's national rugby and football bodies have formed a strong alliance that could see the country host the 2011 Rugby World Cup, just a year after South Africa will be hosting the FIFA Football World Cup.

A rugby-football alliance emerged on Friday after the SA Sports Commission's Bidding and Hosting Committee met to iron out a strategy to bring the 2011 RWC to South Africa.

Decision Postponed on South American World Cup Qualifiers PDF

South American football chiefs have put off a decision on how to organise the continent's qualifying competition for the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa.

"We asked the presidents of the national associations to put forward their ideas at a future meeting so that this can be sorted out with time to spare," said South American Football Confederation (CSF) general secretary Eduardo Deluca on Thursday.

FIFA to Revamp Sponsor and TV Deals PDF

World football governing body FIFA has revealed that it will sell regional sponsorship and television packages from 2007 up to the 2010 World Cup and beyond in an effort to bounce back from recent fiascos.

"We are moving from a global (World Cup) TV offer to a continental offer," said Jerome Valcke, director of TV and marketing at FIFA, at the Soccerex football business event in Dubai.

World football governing body FIFA has thrown a spanner in the works of the SA 2010 preparatory committee by refusing to endorse their proposed organogram.

Since the fiasco of the Korea/Japan showpiece, FIFA have made it clear that they would be hands-on in the running of future World Cup events and not leave it to host nations. The Japan/Korea cup was widely deemed to be chaotic, incurring huge financial losses. FIFA wants capable individuals with international track records to be in charge of South Africa 2010.

Recently re-elected South African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan says his main objective is to turn the organisation into an ideal partner for FIFA, and an organisation that will ensure a world-class 2010 World Cup.

"I want to have a meeting with the staff and read their mood. I will then engage the finance department so that one can establish the exact financial position of the organisation," he said. Once that is done, I will draw up a recovery plan which I will then table before Safa's National Executive Committee (NEC)," he added, without mentioning any timeframes for the process. Jordaan was reinstated to his former job when the Football Association NEC met recently in Johannesburg.

Resources provided for South Africa's hosting of the Football World Cup must be designed to have a life way beyond 2010 if the event is to be of any lasting value to the country, says tourism marketing pioneer, Sheryl Ozinsky.

Ozinsky, who, as head of Cape Town Tourism was known for her innovative and imaginative marketing, is now an independent tourism consultant. She was one of the speakers at a SAPOA conference at the Sandton Sun on November 2 entitled Investing in Sport Property and focusing on the 2010 Football World Cup in this country.

Australia has moved a step closer to gaining access to the World Cup via Asia after the Asians decided to join forces with Oceania in a cheeky plot to take on the world game's superpowers.

The Asians have for many years knocked back Oceania's overtures to play in their World Cup qualifying series.

This has forced Australia, the region's leading country, to face South American giants such as Argentina and Uruguay in failed attempts to reach their first finals since West Germany 1974.

Jordaan Wants more from Bafana PDF

South African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan on Thursday praised Bafana Bafana for playing the kind of football that people wanted to see when they beat Nigeria 2-1 on Wednesday night.

But he made it clear that Bafana Bafana should be consistent.

"If they are consistent, we will go all the way to Germany. That is the important platform ? to use these youngsters as the basis for the team in 2010," said a delighted Jordaan.

Bafana Bafana's next assignment is in March, when they embark on the qualifying rounds for both the World Cup and African Nations Cup in Germany and Egypt in 2006.

World Cup 2010 is Ekurhuleni's 'Goal' PDF

So serious is the region about this that Duma Nkosi, executive mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, recently launched a programme designed to ensure that an East Rander proudly wears the Green and Gold in six years' time.
